Johnette Downing

I am a poet, musician, author, and illustrator from New Orleans, Louisiana who specializes in writing about cultural bridges, and about the intertwining relationships between human nature and our natural environments. In 2001, I discovered haiku: the short, one breath poem of Japanese origin. To my delight and surprise, my many years of working with children prepared me for the art of haiku and its Zen-like quality of being in the moment, of observing the nuances of the natural world and our human connection to it. To see the world anew, and with the wonder, awe, and curiosity of a child is the essence of haiku, even while the body of my work in poetry is for adults.

I approach my work by setting aside time each day to be in nature, whether in rural or urban environments. This approach to haiku is akin to a spiritual practice much like silent, sitting, or walking meditation: to be still, to breathe, listen, observe, and discover the poem as it reveals itself when nature and human nature are juxtaposed.

As a New Orleanian, I am witness to the beauty of nature, but also its destructive power when nature and humankind are out of balance. As our dependency on technology drives us farther away from the grounding effects of the natural world, haiku is needed more than ever, to help us experience the simple joys of our interconnectedness, and to remind us that nature can exist without us, but not the other way around.

Being born three feet below sea level, I am a water sprite, and I welcome you to join me as we ebb and flow through this water-themed site.
